Miles in Memory

June 2021

We’re delighted to launch our new event, Miles in Memory.

It’s a unique opportunity to create your own personal memorial and celebration of a loved one’s life with a special walk of your choice.

During June, we’re inviting families and friends to walk together along a route that holds meaning for them. It can be as short or long as you like. It might take in town or countryside at twilight, sunrise over the sea, or a brunch stop at a favourite café.

The route and timing of your walk is completely up to you – all we ask is that you consider making a donation or raising sponsorship in memory of your loved one. That will mean their legacy can live on and more local families will get the specialist care they need to stay at home.

Reconnecting with the people we care about feels more poignant than ever this year. Separated from our families and friends – unable to say goodbye to those we love in the way we want to – the past year has been tough.

We hope that Miles in Memory will give you the chance to reconnect with your loved ones as you celebrate the life of someone special together.

Choose a distance and day that suits you

You may wish to enjoy a short leisurely ramble or take on a more demanding challenge. No matter how far you decide to walk, all we ask is that you do this during June 2021.

We've taken inspiration from how much it costs to fund hospice care for local patients and their families to create some suggested distances for how far you could walk:

  • £20 pays for an end-of-life care box to hold the equipment that nurses need when caring for a patient at the end of life. Why not walk for 20 minutes everyday in June?
  • £28.50 provides an hour of specialist care from a hospice at home nurse helping patients to stay at home with their families and make every moment matter. Could you walk 28.5 miles?
  • £675 provides the Night Team for one night, giving essential care and support for patients and families whatever time of night so they are not alone. Could you walk through the night whilst our nurses are still out there caring for our patients?

Select a location

Perhaps there's somewhere that reminds you of your loved one or a place that you visited together? There may be somewhere you wish you could've gone to together that you didn’t get the opportunity to before you said goodbye? Whether it's rolling fields with beautiful sunshine, beside the lake where you used to always feed the ducks or watching the sunset by the sea, your Miles in Memory location is your choice.

If you're struggling to find a route or you would like some inspiration, we've found a number of local walks within the area in which our nurses provide care, all of which have places where you can sit and take a moment to reflect.

Make a dedication on our online remembrance page

This year more than ever friends and family have not been able to meet up in the usual way to celebrate loved ones. We realise that for many it is important to have somewhere special to write down thoughts and dedications in memory of that special someone.

We have therefore come together in partnership with Much Loved, to create a dedication page where you can leave a message and upload a photo of a loved one. Please visit renniegrove.celebrationpage.org/milesinmemory2021 and make your dedication. Share this page with your family and friends to mark this special occasion.

If you would like to make a donation, there is an opportunity to do this at the same time. Thank you.

Raising Sponsorship

Your sponsorship money helps us to provide end-of-life care to local patients with cancer and other life-limiting illnesses and their families. Because of the pandemic, families are relying on us more than ever to keep their loved ones safe and out of hospital. This means that we’ve been caring for more patients than ever, as many as 600 at any one time, in fact.

Please consider raising sponsorship to support our services. If you raise money via JustGiving, this will come directly to us. Click here to set up your page today. Send the link round to your friends, family and work colleagues—let them know what you’re doing and why.

Thank you for helping to make every moment matter.
