Richard & Jill's story

"I just want to say THANK YOU. You have all been so wonderful and I could not sing your praises any higher."

At the end of July, Jill Wightman was diagnosed with cancer of unknown primary and given a terminal prognosis of only a short few months left to live. Her husband Richard thanks the Rennie Grove Hospice at Home nurses for taking care of Jill...

"Since our first meeting in early August you organised everything and ensured that I could be with her as much as possible, and make the most of what little time we had left together, without worrying about any of her care. It was great that you were the single point of contact that I could rely on, including liaising with District Nurses and GP, organising prescriptions, in-house injectable drugs, disability aids etc.

"During the later stages when she was confined to bed, I was comforted by the fact that I could call you at any time of day or night if I had any concerns or needed nursing assistance. On such occasions a nurse was generally here in less than half an hour, which I think is such an amazing service; in fact better than she would have had, if she had been in hospital.

"During her short illness, Jill had several spells in hospital, including weekends, and we know that even in hospital you can wait more than 1 hour if you need to see a doctor – especially at the weekend.

"I will always remember other things that you did, that made a real difference. Around about the end of September, Jill mentioned that she was desperate to have a bath or a shower, which was not possible at this stage, in our bungalow. You came up with the brilliant idea of taking Jill to a new care home in Stokenchurch (Chiltern Grange), where they had the necessary facilities.

"You arranged everything with the care home and helped the care home staff during the day. This was a touch of luxury. It is a very high standard care home and even had lighted candles around the bath to provide that extra sense of wellbeing. Jill thought that this was marvellous and was so appreciative of all this.

"When Jill passed away in October, you came over within a very short space of time, and were able to certify the death, and tidy up, without me having to bother with anything.

"Thanks to you, Jill never suffered during her illness, and was able to end her life peacefully in her own home – as she had wanted.

"I just want to say THANK YOU. You have all been so wonderful and I could not sing your praises any higher."
