Val’s story

Volunteering with the retail and trading team, Val was tasked to raise the profile of the retail online platforms under the social media tag “Style by Rennie Grove.”

Back in 2020 Val’s placement looked at risk with pandemic restrictions in place but thankfully with some careful planning Val was able to deliver her social media volunteering from home.

At that time all the retail shops were shut due to COVID-19 so plugging the gap of lost revenue was critical. These new online methods became centre focus as they provided followers with the opportunity to window shop online from the comfort and safety of their own homes.

Within one month Val increased engagement and followers of the sites by 25%. With additional signposting to the Rennie Grove website and other media platforms Val’s work has also helped spread the word of our work much further and much wider.

Val said: “In my communication liaison role with John Lewis and with my retail marketing background I understand how important it is to connect and share with people and to keep them engaged.”

This is reinforced by Nicola Flood, Buying, Merchandising and Business Development Manager, who said: “Val has given us the confidence to engage with our social media platforms, enhancing our customer journey and allowing us to like, share and follow within our local communities and we now have over 600 followers.”

Hospice care has a special meaning for Val too and that was what drew her to Rennie Grove. “My mother was cared for and nursed at home in the north in 2000.” She continued: “My sisters and I have been so grateful to the hospice movement for giving us those last few weeks with our mum. 20 years later when the opportunity arose with the John Lewis Golden Jubilee scheme to give my time, I was really keen to help my local hospice service.”

Nicola said: “Val has provided the retail and trading operation with an invaluable opportunity to start our Instagram account under expert guidance. She also developed the roles for two social media ambassadors so that we can carry on posting weekly social media posts for our shops across Bucks and Herts.”

Val continued to volunteer with the retail online team even after her secondment end but is now back in full-time work. Val added: “Volunteering has given me a new perspective as I hear stories about things from outside my immediate world.”

Val was awarded the opportunity to volunteer with us through the John Lewis Golden Jubilee Trust. This flagship volunteering programme provides John Lewis Partners with the chance to volunteer for up to six months at a charity of their choice while remaining on full pay and benefits.
