Our care for young patients and families

specialist nursing care, play support and respite visits for children with life-limiting illness and their families

Rennie Grove’s care for children

Rennie Grove cares for children and young people in Bucks and Herts whose lives have been affected with life-limiting illness. Whether the illness is their own or that of a family member, we’re here to help.

Whole family support for children with life-limiting conditions

We take a whole-family approach to our care for children with life-limiting conditions. Our care includes specialist nursing, play support and respite visits in the home and we can also provide emotional and practical support through our family support service. Although care is delivered by our Children’s Hospice at Home service, there is no requirement for the child to be reaching end-of-life to receive support; we can provide care for years.  If the illness stabilises they may be discharged and if the child reaches 18 years of age, we will support their transition to adult services.

The choice to receive end-of-life care at home

When a family must face the unfaceable, our children’s team mobilise, putting in place 24-hour on-call support so the parents can reach a familiar Rennie Grove nurse any time of the day or night.  We want to ensure that every family has the choice to receive specialist end-of-life care at home, and never feels alone.

Support for the young family members of current or past Rennie Grove patients

For the young siblings or children of our current or past Rennie Grove patients, we can provide emotional support to help them cope with the life-changing impact of the illness on their lives.  Our play specialist can deliver play and activity sessions that enable siblings to have fun together and families to make memories. Younger children can take part in our children’s support group, a light-hearted, sociable play group just for them. Older children may find it helpful to talk through their feelings with a trained listener or counsellor.
