About our Family Support services

Our Family Support services help patients, carers, family members, children or close friends to cope emotionally and practically when a diagnosis of cancer or another life-changing illness is received. Support is tailored to the needs of each patient and family, drawing expertise from four specialist teams:

  • Bereavement, Listening and Talking Therapies
  • Children and Young People’s Support
  • Complementary Therapy, including scar therapy
  • Supporting Hands, for companionship and help with everyday practical tasks

Our family support teams are here to help you secure practical help, boost your emotional well-being and work through the psychological challenges that life-changing illness brings.

You can read more about our four family support teams and how they can support you below.

Our Family Support is flexible to meet the needs of each patient and family member.  Support can include:

face-to-face support:  A member of our family support team can visit you at home to give you the opportunity to talk.  Alternatively, you can book an appointment at Grove House.

telephone support:  If you would like to talk to someone over the phone, we can arrange a telephone appointment with one of our family support team. This could be a one-off arrangement or part of a series of appointments scheduled at times to suit you.

counselling:  If needed, we can also offer sessions with a trained counsellor.

support for children and young people: We can support children and young people with listening or counselling and provide advice and support to parents and teachers to help them to manage the child or young person’s needs through a period of life-changing illness or bereavement. We can visit either at home or at school providing support specific to each child or young person’s needs.

complementary therapy: Our complementary therapy team boosts well-being for patients and their carers with massage, reiki, aromatherapy, reflexology, scar therapy and more

social support groups for bereavement: Many people can find facing and dealing with bereavement a lonely experience. Meeting once a month, with people in similar situations, gives the opportunity to talk about your feelings and experiences.

annual remembrance services: Our annual remembrance services and Light up a Life ceremonies offer a chance for reflection in a safe and welcoming environment.

We’re able to support our current and former patients, and their families, and also any adult seeking bereavement support who lives in our catchment area across Bucks and west Herts
