Having a Will and keeping it up to date is important for lots of reasons. Firstly, if you die without a Will, you won’t have any say in who gets what. Make Your Will Month

During the month of May, local participating solicitors will draw up a standard will and, instead of charging their usual fee, they will give you the opportunity to make a donation to Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care.

Once you’ve written your Will, don’t forget to keep it up to date. Big life events like getting married or divorced, having children, buying a house, or inheriting could be a suitable time to revisit your Will.

Charitable gifts in Wills can also reduce inheritance tax.  Gifts left to charities are usually free of inheritance tax. In some circumstances, leaving a charitable gift can even reduce the amount of inheritance tax your loved ones are liable for. 

Inheritance tax is payable when your estate, after all debts are deducted, is worth over £325,000. That figure increases to £650,000 for a married couple, provided the first person to pass away leaves their entire estate to their spouse.

First you need to choose who you want to act as your executor(s). This is someone named in your Will who will be responsible for making sure your instructions are carried out. It should be someone you trust, and you may want to ensure they’re happy to take on the role.  

Next, visit a solicitor or use an online service such as Bequeathed, to have your Will drawn up. To make sure your gift will get to us, you’ll need to include our charity name, registered office address and registered charity number as follows:

Finally, once you’re happy with your Will, sign it and store it in a safe place. Your solicitor, should you have one, will probably store a copy too. Make sure your executor(s) knows where to find your Will. 

A residuary gift is a share of your estate. Your estate refers to everything you owned, including money in your bank account, investments, and physical belongings such as your property and furnishings. You can leave a specific percentage of the value of your estate after any taxes or costs have been subtracted.

A pecuniary gift is a fixed amount of money.

A specific gift is a particular item, such as a house, stocks and shares or jewellery. Anything that’s of financial value to you. Usually Rennie Grove Peace will sell items like this in order to raise much needed funds.
